Life History
John James STIMPSON was born in 1835 as the illegitimate son of Elizabeth STIMSON (1812) of Frilford Berks. It is possible that John’s father was the widower John BROUGHTON of Tubney, who’s first wife Hannah SMALLBONE had died the year before John’s birth.
Shortly after the birth of son John, Elizabeth STIMPSON married John BROUGHTON at Marcham church on 13th Oct 1835, this being the local church for residents of Frilford. They then set up home at Tubney Berks.
Further children were then born and, by the time of the 1841 census, John STIMPSON is listed as age 6 and living with this Broughton family at Tubney. John spent his entire childhood at Tubney and was still living there aged 16 on the 1851 census (listed as John # BROUGHTON) working as an Agricultural Labourer.
In his early 20’s John met his future wife Amelia HARRIS of Southleigh Oxon. Amelia had been living and working in the Pub at Hardwick, and by 1860 she had become pregnant and gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Edith HARRIS. John then moved to Southleigh with Amelia and, shortly after, they were married at Southleigh church on Saturday 7-Apr-1860.
John & Amelia then set up home in Fyfield, and then Netherton in a cottage rented from George STONE the local farm owner.
They went on to have a further 6 children.
Son Albert STIMPSON (b.1861.Fyfield d.1932 Swindon)
Son Shadrach STIMPSON (b.1864 Netherton d.1909 Appleton)
Daughter Rosina STIMPSON (b. 1867 Netherton d. 1939 Ploughly) (Known to be at Richmond Mdx in 1901)
Daughter Florence Emily STIMPSON ( b. 1869 Netherton d. 1869 Netherton) age 0
Daughter Edna STIMPSON (b. 1875 Fyfield d. 1908) (known to be at Risley Derbyshire in 1901)
Daughter Lily STIMPSON (b. 1882 Fyfield d. 19??) (known to be at Nuneham Courtney in 1900 and Richmond Mdx in 1901)
When John was aged 42, in 1877, his mother Eliza Broughton died at Tubney aged 64, and Johns wife Amelia was present at the death.
John spent the rest of his life living in Netherton / Fyfield and died there aged 51. He was buried at Fyfield church on 8-Feb-1886. His wife Amelia later moved to Nunham Courtney and died in 1902 age 66.
In 1868 John is mentioned as the current tenant of cottages for sale at Netherton Fyfield Berks following the death of the owner George STONE. Also in 1872 when the same cottage was sold under the will of the late Mr. J PITT.

These 2 articles, from Jackson’s Oxford Journal, refer to William SPIERS, John STIMPSON. & Ewin FISHER. On the 1871 census (see below) these 3 are all listed next door to each other, hence proving this article relates to John James STIMPSON (1835). The articles suggest that John was renting the middle cottage from landlord George STONE for aprox £3 per annum in 1868, and for £12 per annum in 1872. The articles describe the 3 cottages as being "stone built with gardens, … enclosed with a good stone mound and adjoining the road through Netherton". It is assumed that the 3 cottages were close to Stone’s farm at Netherton. (see map)
